Fashion Story

One of the subjects that I like is identity, and while going to the last tutorial in 2019, I told Vicky about the developing countries aesthetic. It is a very unique, but well know aesthetic. India, Indonesia, Peru, and more have the same little markets, same colors, materials and sometimes even same fabrics.

While talking this with Vicky, we realized there is comparison between London and Lima, Madrid and Jakarta, and so on. Developed countries have their own issues there for their own aesthetic. We were talking about how this subject could be my master project. I am not sure yet because the other subject means more to me for different reasons. Still, I read more about the subject and I wanted to make an editorial with that subject, so I did that last week.

I found a book in LCF like a month or maybe 2 months ago about Latin Portraits, so I started with that.

This are paintings from different Latin American countries, but from the post hispanic era. You can see the mix between the people, colors, textures, fabrics, religious, flowers, and more.

Then I realize I wanted to add something Peruvian but pre hispanic so I remembered of this.

Three things I liked the most. The tradition of the braids, the colorful costumes and the burn cheeks from people of the andes.

The idea was no to re create those images but to re interpreted them.

At the same time I thought this was too Peruvian, so I changed some things of my idea. I decided to insert the other countries in a way and also I choose a model that is Peruvian but is a mix of everything our culture is now. By adding that we made the pictures and I loved them. But they have a mixed between a lot of things.

These are some photos of the fashion story. They are in bad quality and without any retouch.

At the end the pictures are not very “latin american”, but for me they are. All the designes are Peruvian, and Latin Americans are a mix culture. First the Spanish came to the native Peruvians or (latin people), then the Italians, then Japanese and Chinese. Thats why when you ask some one you will hear “we are mixed” I feel mixed. I mixed between native Peruvians (like my grandma), Italians (like my other grandma) and thats what we are.

Also I choose some fabrics that can be from India (like the rug), but it also reminds me to a virgin. I think the re interpretation of your own culture can be so many things. This is my first editorial since LCF and I must say I have more confident in my self, I think I am getting more and more my own style.

Bienvenido 2020

The role of clothing in gender violence

Aprox a month ago a very powerful and tru song came out in Chile. This anthem was written by a feminist group called LASTESIS from Chile and it got everyones attention. It spread to Perú, then other countries from Latinoamerica and almost five days ago I saw it was sang in Europa, the states, India and more.

While hearing this song I was thinking about the relationship with the clothing. This is actually more than a song. Its and anthem, a performance, a protest it is everything for us. In Perú like in other countries from Latinoamerica the point of this, is to stop gender violence or at least to draw the attention of the government and the society.

When you go and see the performance you see a very important clothing role. First, you see a garment (I will call it garment) that covers the eyes of all the women. It is a transparent black fabric and it represents that this is not an individual protest but it is a collective one. It also means women are protesting not only for them, but for all the women that have been affected.

The second thing is the clothing. The collective ask you to come dressed like you are going out in the night. Glitter, glam, colorful garments is what you see in the streets while they are singing the anthem. The last thing they ask you to bring is the green scarf that is the representation of legal abortion.

And it wasn’t my fault, where I was, or how I dressed.”

That is the one in London

I flew back home the first of December and I could go to the protest but I talked with some persons that did and they said it was a very powerful day.

“The song is about the worse forms of gender violence: femicides, disappearances, rapes that are all difficult to trace because they are buried under a layer of silence. And silence, in all these cases, is the worst possible scenario you can imagine.” (Catalina Venegas)

This video is in spanish but is the most complete one

Part of the anthem in english

Patriarchy is a judge who judges us for being born
and our punishment is the violence you don’t see.
It’s femicide, impunity for my murderer,
it’s disappearance, it’s rape.
And it wasn’t my fault, where I was, or how I dressed.
The rapist is you, the rapist is you.
It’s the police, the judges, the state, the president.
The oppressive state is a macho rapist.

First Fashion Film

Last Friday I went to Wawin´s place to finish my Fashio Film. Mère is the first fashion film I shoot in February with a lot of good friends. To make this film a lot of time, love and hard work was made. I spend almost one year talking with the director about my idea, scouting the location, the casting, and more.

We knew it was going to be a long process because the director was developing his movie and he was flying to Mexico to get a co producer for his film. I waited and worked in little things of the film while he was not in Lima. Also both of us needed to work (because of the money), so our time together was priceless.

At the end we decided to film it on December, then January, and so on. One day the main dancer called me saying that she was pregnant and she needed to make the film in Feb, so we did. She danced with 3 months from 6 pm to 7 am. It was a very powerful night. I really enjoyed it.

Watching the film now is very magical. You think something in your head as a result and then it has the possibility to change to so many different directions. This film was one of those examples. It changed so many times, it is beautiful.

I am going to make like a thank you meeting in my house with all the collaborators of the film. I will shoe them the result and have some beers I think. I am looking forward to submit it to different festivals to see how the film goes.

I know I apply with one of the first versions of the film but now I have it, finally and I wanted to put it here for a while.

Editing the project

  1. the chaos: I could not convert the dng to a mov format. I ask for help to a friend and after an hour trying to do it we realized that mi laptop doesnt support the size of the clip. My only solution was to process every clip from raw to pro res, so I could edit it in my laptop.
  2. selecting the clips: I should have film more things. I think I need more actions in all of my vignettes. Also, I think I will have a problem with the focus, but I will leave that to the end.
  3. making the first cut: I was putting all my clips like I draw them. Bad idea! It does not work! It looked very slow and actually did not tell anything at all, I did not feel anything. After a while I changed it. I played with the order, trying to flow with the edition and it worked. I think I will sleep over it and make more changes tomorrow.
  4. the sound: I will have help from 2 friends that will make the voices of 2 of my characters and I will make the other one. I also check moby free music https://mobygratis.com/ free There are some compositions that are really good and I think I can make a mix between the voices and the music. I need to write a letter telling them why I want to use the music and if they say its good, then they send you a permission letter to use the copyright.
  5. after effects: I will use ae for the title and credits for sure, but I was also thinking in using them for the part of the studio. Maybe it will work better. Not sure how but we will see!

Filming + Editing

How to start?

As a part of my studies in LCF, I wanted to try to film and edit. I was always doing the art direction for films or photos, so I thought that was my only job. I really like how LCF invite us to develop more skills through the master.

In Laura´s project I took the black magic camera for the first time. It was a very huge challenge for me and I promise to my self I was going to edit it.

I started editing yesterday. I saw two references of editing from FENTY and GUCCI that can help me to edit it.

After making the first cut, I realize it was imposible to edit like this. Still is a good reference for future projects.
This film makes more sense to me as a reference for the editing of the film. I do not have a lot of footage but I think I can create something like this.

First week in Perú

Hope no one missed me here!

I came back home one week ago, and I must say it was the most amazing thing. I saw all my friends, boyfriend, family and more. I really needed to re charge my energy.

I took 5 books from London to Lima. I am reading one of those, but it is very difficult to keep the rhythm. Also I wanted to work, so I was sending emails or using Instagram to get in touch with producers or directors. I got one tv commercial, where I did the art direction + styling.

I hated. I forgot how racist we are among us. The client changed all the casting because they wanted all white people. The same happened with the styling, they wanted more produced and not real. It was a weird meeting.

Anyways, the things I liked about this job is that I worked again. I love filming so thats a good thing. I did like 6 sets in photoshop from 8 am to 4 am, with 2 hours of break. I have to say, my wrist was hurting a lot!

There was only one big issue in this production, the budget. They did not have any to make all the sets, so I took 3 suitcases of my things to put them on the set.
