Bruce Nauman is a restlessly inventive artist. Since the late 1960s he has continually tested what an artwork can be, by reshaping old forms and creating new ones. His ground-breaking works using sound, film, video and neon have influenced generations of artists.
This is the first major exhibition of his work in London in more than 20 years. It allows visitors to engage with the artist’s universe through immersive installations with a strong emphasis on sound and moving image, as well as poetic sculptures and neon pieces.
Major works like Double Steel Cage Piece 1974, Anthro/Socio (Rinde Spinning) and Clown Torture 1987 highlights Nauman’s distinctive preoccupations and how he incessantly revisits them – yet never repeats himself.
A lot of his projects involve his childhood. He plays with his childhood memories and use it in an “adult” context. Mixing photography in the left with a video in the right. The only thing I dont like is the light. The rooms were very bright so you could see the videos with the right quality.
The first idea was to mix 2D, 3D and some filmed images but due to Covid19 I decided to make it all in 3D with a very natural and organic aesthetic.
I started to gather the team back in May. I presented the project to 3 friends when we discussed my idea and the film itself. I showed it to them because they werent my closest friends or any film related audience. I wanted to know if they understood or felt anything when I talked about the project and its vision. The second part was to test it. Back in March (its in my blog in March) I talked with Ale, a Peruvian Animator based in London. We did the first 2 mockups of two scenarios of the film.
When the prototype was crated I decided to apply to a funding from Peru. I think I wont get it because the project wasnt good enough at that moment but it was good for me because I want to get more practice in fundings applications. After that test I decided to show it to some friends in the film industry. They told me to contact a 3D producer and they showed me a very well known 3D/2D studio from Peru.
I painted the images that I draw in mi Ipad for a better idea of how the film will look. This wasnt the pallet color tho.
These images have more color and details than the first ones. It helped me understand what I wanted in the film and how I wanted. Regardless the colors that I used. It also helped me to practice my drawing and illustration.
The first idea of the film was to create a hybrid film which was linked to the research “hybrid culture case study in Peru post Spanish conquest”. During the lockdown back in May I created this images based in the research of hybrid art and culture in Peru. I also worked with the designers who created contemporary designes but inspired in Latin culture. In these images I portrayed a little bit of Kitsch aestehtics, landscapes, parts of the artisans work, markets from back home, among others.
During this process I asked a lot of Peruvian friends if they could send me any photos that will remind them of Peru. I got a lot of photos of different cities, towns, food, people, etc making my work easier to curate all the art from Peru.
